Smyrne

Smyrne is an original ensemble piece with music, exloring the themes of genocide and of population displacement through the prism of the Asia Minor Catastrophe of 1922 and the burning of Smyrne. Survivors' testimonies and the stories of refugees and their descendants are interwoven with the remarkable songs of the time, and form the basis for individual and ensemble improvisations. Constructed and directed by Yannis Simonides, and in collaboration with Gregoris Maninakis and the Mikrokosmos Ensemble, it premiered in English at the Maliotis Center in Brookline, Massachusetts in September 2007, and it is scheduled to tour the New York & Boston areas in the spring and fall of 2009.
